World Tree

2022-09-15 notes (Rant on gamers and the DistroTube channel)

It always seems to be the big gamers in the Linux domain who are the most willing to compromise. Whether this involves proprietary blobs, systemd, or whatever, it doesn't seem to matter.

I've also noticed today that the DistroTube channel on YouTube (use invidious to see it instead) has the most uninformed takes on a number of issues. One case was the doom and gloom video from Bryan Lunduke, declaring the near end of GNU/Linux. DistroTube's response even ignored answers already provided by Lunduke himself in the original video. I'm not saying Lunduke was right. It was merely a plausible possibility to consider.

DistroTube on another video was rambling about how he's tired of people saying there are no options without systemd. Who in the world was saying this to him? No one denies that there are distributions of the GNU/Linux system without systemd. The points are always about how prevalent it is. How it encompasses all of the top distros. How it takes more and more into itself. There are many other concerns as well, but no one says there are literally zero options that are systemd free. It's just that these are viewed as more niche, and there's no telling how long maintaining them will be plausible.

This is part of why the general "Use Linux" advocacy is weak. People are then brought in who have all sorts of expectations as baggage. It ends up contributing to the Windowsificaion of the entire GNU/Linux landscape. Perhaps this is one reason the OpenBSD developers really don't engage in the evangelizing of people to use the operating system. I don't particularly press people to OpenBSD myself, but do believe in general advocacy of free (open source) software. Fighting against mor proprietary stuff, bloat, systemd, etc, in the larger system also keeps Big FOSS from taking advantage of newbies. This issue isn't and shouldn't be about elitism.
